“ไก่ อูกัส” (Kai Ukas) หรือ “พีร์อุมากร วระเศรษฐ์ถาพร” ดีไซเนอร์ไทยคนแรกในเอเชียที่ได้รับรางวัล DE FÊLÉ DE MODE “เดฟิเล เดอ โมด” หรือรางวัล “ปลอกนิ้วทองคำ” จากประเทศฝรั่งเศส ซึ่งนักออกแบบระดับโลก อย่าง เทียรี่ มูแกลร์ (Thierry Mugler) และอเล็กซานเดอร์ แมคควีน (Alexander Mcqueen) ฯลฯ เคยได้รับมาแล้ว

สำหรับรางวัลปลอกนิ้วทองคำ มี “ปลอกนิ้วมือ” เป็นสัญลักษณ์ เนื่องจากเป็นอุปกรณ์สำคัญที่ช่างเสื้อในอดีตต้องสวมไว้ในขณะที่สอยผ้ากันนิ้วโดนเข็มทิ่มแทงทำให้ได้รับการบาดเจ็บ อันแสดงถึงความละเอียดพิถีพิถัน ซึ่งความละเอียดเป็นสิ่งที่คุณไก่ได้รับการปลูกฝังมาใน DNA เช่นเดียวกัน

“ไก่ อูกัส” มีความคิดว่า จะกระตุ้นผ้าไทยสามารถนำเงินจากต่างประเทศเข้าไทย ช่วยเหลือคนท้องถิ่นให้มีงานทำอย่างยั่งยืน จึงหันมาศึกษาผ้าไทย พร้อมค้นหาเทคนิคใหม่ๆ ด้วยการนำผ้าไทยมาตัดต่อให้เป็นผ้าผืนใหม่ และใช้ในการออกแบบตัดเย็บที่มีสไตล์ และเป็นสากล

ย้อนวัยดีไซเนอร์ไทยท่านนี้ เธอมีความรักในการออกแบบเสื้อผ้ามาตั้งแต่เด็ก ชอบวาดรูปตุ๊กตาใส่เสื้อผ้าสวยๆ นอกจากนี้ในวัย 13 ปี ยังฝึกการเดินแบบ พร้อมทั้งปรับปรุงบุคลิกภาพการวางตัวในสังคมด้วยตนเอง จนกลายเป็นคนที่มีบุคลิกที่โดดเด่น ผลพวงคือ ทำให้เธอกลายเป็นพิธีกรฝีปากกล้าในการทำ Image Maker ให้กับคนที่ไม่มีสไตล์เป็นของตนเอง ให้กลายเป็นคนที่มีสไตล์ ในรายการ Body Design by UKAS ทางช่อง H-Plus Chanel ซึ่งทำให้เธอมีแฟนคลับติดตามมากมาย

ต่อมาเริ่มศึกษาการออกแบบตัดเย็ดเสื้อผ้าอย่างจริงจัง และเปิดร้านเสื้อผ้าเล็กๆแถวสีลม กรุงเทพฯ แรกๆก็ประสบปัญหาการขาดทุน แต่ก็พยายามประคองธุรกิจเรื่อยๆ มา และค่อยๆสร้างชื่อเป็นที่รู้จักในแวดวงนักออกแบบเสื้อผ้า รวมทั้งวงการบันเทิง ที่ให้ “ไก่ อูกัส”ออกแบบตัดเย็บเสื้อผ้าให้

เธอบอกว่าการทำงานออกแบบ จำเป็นต้องมีแรงบันดาลใจ เธอจึงติดตามผลงานของดีไซเนอร์ระดับโลกหลายท่าน แต่ก็พยายามฉีกแนวออกไปเพื่อไม่ให้ซ้ำ จะไม่ลอกเลียนแบบใครเป็นอันขาด โดยเธอให้แง่คิดว่า “ดีไซเนอร์ คือ ครีเอทีฟของแท้ ต้องคิดให้เป็นก่อนใคร....คนที่จะเติบโตได้ต้องมีความคิดเป็นของตัวเอง เพราะคนที่โลกจารึก คือ คนที่ไม่เหมือนใครเท่านั้น และโลกก็พร้อมจะลืมคุณเหมือนกัน ถ้าคุณทำไม่ได้ หรือทำไม่ดี แต่ถ้าเราทำได้ให้นำของดีนั้นออกมาเลย เพราะวันพรุ่งนี้เราไม่รู้ได้ว่าจะมีชีวิตอยู่หรือไม่”

รางวัลระดับโลกที่ได้รับ ยังทำให้ “ไก่ อูกัส” เรียนรู้ระบบการทำงานที่เป็นสากล ใส่ใจในคุณภาพ และยังนำโอกาสดีๆ มาสู่ชีวิตด้วย เช่น การได้ไปเป็นหนึ่งในคณะกรรมการอันทรงเกียรติในการตัดสินการประกวดนางแบบ Super model Asia ร่วมกับดีไซเนอร์ระดับโลกอย่าง Issabel Marant , ออกแบบเครื่องแต่งกายให้กับภาพยนตร์เรื่อง “สียามา”(Village of warriors) เป็นอีกหนึ่งผลงานที่แสดงถึงความคิดสร้างสรรค์อันน่าตื่นตาของเธอ

ความคิดฝันของดีไซเนอร์ไทยระดับโลก “ไก่ อูกัส” เธอคิดว่าก่อนอายุ 60 ปี ของตัวเอง ต้องการจะมีส่วนผลักดันให้เด็กไทย-นักออกแบบไทย ไปสู่ระดับโลก ให้โลกได้รู้ว่าในเอเชียยังมีนักออกแบบไทยที่เก่งๆอยู่มาก และคนที่มีฝันอยากเป็นดีไซเนอร์ แต่กำลังท้อ ก็ขอให้เริ่มต้นใหม่.. “ถ้าทิ้งความฝันของตัวเองไป-ให้ไปเก็บมาใหม่-เอามาปัดฝุ่น-และเอาฝันนั้นมาครอบครองให้ได้”

1. ปี 2000 รับรางวัลปลอกนิ้วทองคำ DE FÊLÉ DE MODE [Golden Thimble Awards] จากสมาคมฝรั่งเศส

2. ปี 2001 ได้รับเกียรติเป็นอย่างสูงจากบริษัทญี่ปุ่น Thai Mikasa ให้ไปเป็นกรรมการการตัดสินการประกวด Super Model Asia ที่ Putri Bali ประเทศอินโดนีเซียถึง 2 ครั้งเพื่อคัดนางแบบไปร่วมงานกับ Brand Name ระดับโลกร่วมกับอีก 5 Designer ระดับโลกอย่าง….1.MISS ISABEL MARANT จากฝรั่งเศส 2.Mr.Vittorio Ciccollallo จากอิตาลี 3.Miss Harada Miwako จากญี่ปุ่น 4.MR.SONG WYKIDD จากสิงคโปร์ 5.ไก่อูกัสจาก ประเทศไทย

3. ปี 2001 ได้รับการโหวตให้เป็น 1 ใน 10 ผู้หญิงเก่งแห่งปี จากหนังสือพิมพ์บ้านเมืองฉบับวันที่ 23 เดือนพฤษภาคม 2544

4. ปี 2002 ได้มีโอกาสออกแบบในการแข่งขันประมูลงาน ที่ Abu-Dhabi Airport Service Uniform ซึ่ง Abu-Dhabi เป็นเมืองหลวงของ UAE. ชนะดีไซเนอร่จาก 3 ประเทศอย่าง สิงค์โปร์ ฟิลิปปินส์ และฝรั่งเศส

5. ปี 2004 นำธงไทยไปโบกต่อหน้า 45 ประเทศ ในงานแฟชั่นโชว์ Thai Modern Style by…UKAS ที่ Main Stage ของ Dubai Shopping Festival

6.2017 ได้รับรางวัลพระพิฆเณศวรทองคำ ร่วมกับดาราและศิลปินที่มีเชื่อเสียงมากมาย

Kai Ukas interview with Optimistic Magazine Thailand.

A famous fashion designer from Thailand also known as PeerUmakorn worasatrthaporn. The first designer from Asia whom received DE FÊLÉ DE MODE awards from France, which is the same awards who gave to Thierry Mugler and Alexander Mcqueen years before. She is also a Costume Designer for film productions such as SIYAMA, a movie by Mono Films. The Thai film that made an outstanding debut in Cannes. Guaranteed by Hollywood Film Industry London

DE FÊLÉ DE MODE

Although there are a lot of talented Thai designers, but Ukas was the first designer who received DE FELE DE MODE (Golden finger glove awards) in 2000. For using Thai Fabric with modern cutting. She used to ordered fabrics from all over the world, different countries, that had been used for her clothing materials. One day she realised that Thai fabrics have good quality and high standard as well as import fabrics. But with unique style she made it more elegant than normal Thai clothes at the time, and brought Thai fashion scenes into international level.

“People always forget about their roots. But the root is an important factor to success. Everything would be fine if you are at the right place and the right time. You can’t sell nice suits to the people who already sell suits. You must do something different. I use Thai fabrics to identify who I am, where I came from. It is the mixture of fantasy and creativity. It shows courage and confident that would be qualified for this award. It is an honour” Kai Ukas

The award came in the shape of Finger armour. It has deeper meaning because this armour will protect designer from working process while sewing. Working hard, neat and profession is in Ukas DNA.

Young Ukas, dressing up the dolls

While she was in primary school, Ukas told us she remembered she loved drawing. She drew paper dolls and changing clothes for her dolls without realizing that this is the first step that led her into the fashion world. She got her strength from her father and the sense of marketing from her mother. But with the passion of designing she forced herself to work hard and made her own money for studying fashion at Alliance Francaise de Bangkok. After the graduation, she followed her dream.

“I was self-studying about since I was 13, then I took it seriously at Alliance Francaise de Bangkok. It was hard studying and dedication. One pattern of a skirt, I have to do it 20 times for each design until you cant find any little mistake.”

With interesting character and fresh attitude. She became an Image make and TV host for Body Design by UKAS at H-Plus Chanel in 2013.

Costume Designer

Ukas had many opportunities to work in various fields. She was the judge for fashion contests like Super model Asia along with another world class designer, Issabel Marant. With the interest of Film Industry. She worked as the costume designer for SIYAMA (Village of warriors)

Siyama is an old village during Ayuthaya era (400 years ago) if you cut some alphabet out, you will see the word SIAM which means Ancient Thailand. For costume design, it was challenging. It involved with skill and technic. It’s not only making costumes look good. It must be wearable. This what art is all about. We may have heard that armour designs are normally made by male artist. But as a woman, Ukas did a great job too. No boundaries for arts.

Ukas said working of film is different from fashion. She must study the plot, mood and tone also the theme of the film before designing each outfits. It took a lot of energy. Ukas told us she used black and brown shade of leather to contrast each troops. A little bit of Barbarian style with Exotic warriors. It’s got great response from viewers.

The Outstanding works of Ukas

Not only a fashion designer, Ukas is also Image Maker. She has worked with international organisation like Abu Dhabi Airport of United Arab emirates. Her responsibility is to design uniforms for leaders, officers and workers, one of challenging and honorable works she has ever done.

From global to locals, there are so many hotels and organizations in Thailand that employees wear uniform designed by Ukas.

Ukas design could be categorized as Hi-end Street Wear Style. Something that people can wear in day and night.

“I used to design something fantasy and creativity at early stage of my career. They looked fabulous but cannot wear in reality. When I’m older I’m interested to design something more casual. Back to basic. To me simply is the best. But fashion has its life circle. Like looping. I’ll be back to design fancy clothes in special occasions. I takes a lot of energy.” Ukas clothing always has feminine side. It defines smart women, working woman in the big city with confident to do the right thing and follow their dreams.

I design dream not design cloths.

The experience of working in fashion business and film industry pushed Ukas into various creative fields. She is invited to be the judge for many model contests and fashion show competition. Ukas made and designed outfits for top musicians and celebrity in Thailand.

“I love to design clothes. I was dreaming of being the great designer since I was a kid. This is beyond what I expected. It seems like GOD choose this path for me. All the awards in my career is to remind me to keep up the good work. Work harder and better. I want to motivate people in my country that cloth is not just a cloth. It is an important thing to identify yourself to public.”

Her goal before reaching 60, is to encourage young designers to work global, to international scale. Not only in Asia. Thai fashion scene is equal to develop counties. She always tells international designers to check out Thailand. It is a huge fashion market here to invest.

“I think the Root is very important. World market need something unique and different. I always fascinated to created new stuffs. When one thing is done, I continued with another one It’s like human a nature. Enough is never enough. I used to think about early-retirement at 50, but I couldn’t”

The Path of Designer

Her first clothing store in Bangkok is not so easy. With no experience of running business before, it made her a failure. She was still a student. He father told her to study more before thinking about something too big to control. Then she continued studying in Marketing which she thanked her father for that. After graduation she finally has her own store in the brand Ukas at Silom Road for 10 more years.

The interest of Rock ’n’ Roll and punk music during her teenage years also inspired Ukas for finding her style. She designed some outfits for musicians and rock stars. She will mix the punk rock flavor with Thai style sometimes when she think it is suitable with the concept. The favorite designers that Ukas mentioned are well-known designers such as; Yves saint Laurent, Christian Dior, Valentino, Chanel and Alexander Mcqueen. She said these artists are unique and irreplaceable

“People who always follow other footsteps or living in the shadow will never be recognized. You have to be yourself and do it your bests like there is no tomorrow.”

For The New Generation

Ukas concerned about identity and uniqueness. Even she loves western Rock ’n’ Roll and all modern stuffs. She is still have attitude and sprit of an Asian woman. Young people should study the roots and learn about basics of what they want to do. It is very important. You must concentrate in every little details of your works. Learn how to create pattern that can be made for real clothes and people can wear in reality too.

“New designer today cannot draw picture anymore, which is bad. All new technology make people lazy. They forgot their skills and rely on computer. To me basic is still important. You must have creativity first before using hi-tech tools. It will show that your works are different.”

She also believes that fashion business in Thailand should be supported by government or big organization like LVMH. It will make profits and income to the country as same as tourism. Good designer is the key of trendsetter.

“It is you who wear clothe, do not let the cloth wear you.”

Optimistic attitude and Inspirations.

“Sometimes great inspiration came from hard work, pressure and imperfection, if we learn from trouble we can win”

Ukas said she never thought that a tiny woman in a small country like her would make an impact in the world. But she did it, it was worth fighting for.

“The rest of the dreams are still challenging, but I don’t take it too seriously anymore. The important thing is doing the best that you can, no matter what the result is. What is belong to us, it will be ours. What is not, even you tried hard it won’t be success. In reality, you can rise and fall. To be optimistic is the way to see things in positive way. You win, it means you are successful. You lose, it means you learned.”

She added.

“I’m not a type of person who’s sitting in the Ivory tower, I am the one who jump into the battlefield with my swords.”

33 years of working as a designer is not easy. Ukas was born in the family that was not willing to support her dream of being a designer. But she’d never give up her dream. She tried hard and educated herself in the field that she was interested in since the age of 13. Beside DE FÊLÉ DE MODE [Golden Thimble Awards] in 2000. She also received an honorable awards from Sweden [International Cultural Heritage Awards] in 2018
